Water Shortages in La Plata Escalate into Political Conflict

Water shortages in neighborhoods of La Plata have once again climbed the local political agenda, with a request for information voted on in the Deliberative Council to demand formal explanations from the concessionaire company Aguas Bonaerenses S.A. (ABSA) and control bodies. According to the Argentine News Agency, in recent days, ABSA reported scheduled interruptions for pipeline repairs in areas such as Villa Elvira, Villa Elisa, and the surroundings of the La Plata–Buenos Aires highway exit, while complaints persist about prolonged outages in other parts of the city. The conflict included neighborhood protests: street closures were reported in José Hernández, and in Tolosa (526 and 18), more than two months without supply were denounced, a scenario that is also replicated in neighboring areas of the region. The approved file requests details on the reasons for the interruptions, the possible activation of an emergency action plan, resources deployed, corrective measures, and the condition of the facilities prior to the cuts. The request also incorporates questions about economic compensation and possible sanctions in the event of a breach of the concession contract, at a sensitive point: the provision of an essential service during a period of high temperatures. With the issue now judicialized in the public debate, the pressure now focuses on the official response: the Council seeks for the information to arrive in writing and with technical detail, while the affected neighborhoods warn that the problem has stopped being exceptional and has become routine.
